I must have played Tycoon Casino before but this time I approached it with fresh eyes in order to write a review.

There was much to like – enjoyable slots, plenty of free coins, quests – but after hours of testing today I remembered exactly why I’d deleted it in the past.

Let’s take a look at the overall score first along with a summary of the important features.

Tycoon Casino Slot Selection

Of the reviews I’ve completed so far this app has the smallest selection with just 58 slots in their line up.

However, none of them are locked and that makes a huge difference. There’s no need to wait to enjoy everything they have to offer.

The description information on Google Play store says “Best Las Vegas slot machines exclusively.”

I searched for a few of their top slots in relation to any mention of them being in Vegas and couldn’t find any and none of these look familiar to me.

It would be more accurate if they said they had Vegas-style slots instead.

All of them are video slots and while they don’t look familiar to me they are styled after popular themes and slots that most will have seen before.

For example, the first slot in their list is 88 Grand which has some similarities to 88 Fortunes with the pot of coins at the top that, when filled, gives you a shot at picking matches for one of four jackpots.

It’s December as I write this and there is a seasonal slot called Christmas Joy with Santa, snowmen, and bell symbols. Every 10th spin in this slot gives you ALL the wilds that landed in all of the previous nine spins. That’s fairly entertaining and can lead to big wins.

There’s a variety of themes, too, including pandas, dragons, princesses, genies, Halloween, and 7s.

There’s something for everyone here despite the smaller selection.

Free Coin Options

Throughout the day you have lots of opportunities to collect free coins.

Every 12 minutes there are 500,000 coins showing as a free gift in the Shop screen. That’s definitely meant to draw you into buying coins because you can’t collect them without seeing the coin packages and you’ll be pulled back there 5 times an hour.

If you find those screens too tempting and you’re trying to keep from buying coins then this might not be the app for you (but there are other reasons this one will annoy you anyway so keep reading).

Tycoon Casino also gives you a spin of the wheel every four hours that will earn you a minimum of 5 million coins each time.

In addition, they provide free coins on their Facebook page once a day every day.

You can also watch videos (ads) in exchange for free coins. Some videos are super-short and others are 30 seconds. I didn’t see that there was any rhyme or reason to the amounts earned, though. One short ad gave me 2 million coins while watching a longer 30 second ad gave me only 1.8 million coins.

If you were to collect at least all four of your daily wheel spins and all of your 12 minute gift coins (which is impossible unless you give up sleeping for 24 hours but let’s just suppose for now) that would give you enough for 320 free spins at the lowest possible bet.

Tycoon Casino has side games,too, that provide additional free coin opportunities. One is referred to as your Daily Quest.

You get to pick the level of difficulty for your Quest (easy, medium, hard) and then you need to complete the required steps for each in order to win the prize. The harder your Quest the higher the final prize.

For my review I selected the Easy level. To complete it required that I meet a set of tasks for each of six slots. These tasks included things like “Win 9 times”, “Collect 10 wilds”, and “Win 95m coins”.

Bonus coins are awarded after every two slot completions and a final prize is awarded when you complete the entire Quest.

It took me 64 spins to complete the set of tasks for the first slot machine and each additional one took more and more spins to complete. Getting past the fourth slot in my quest took 391 spins.

It would definitely take some concentration to get through just the Easy Quest level. The prize for doing so was 20 million coins. I did not complete the Quest but I did go from level 1 to level 5 and my coins went from the initial 115 million I started with to 360 million thanks to some big hits and bonuses.

I did enjoy the Quest side game and it did get me to try out slots on the app I might not have otherwise played.

The second side game is called Coin Book. This may rotate in and out periodically. You collect money bags through purchases or play. These bags have coins inside that fill up spots in a collection. Completing a collection awards you more free coins.

Once you reach level 12 you unlock a daily task list that also awards prizes.

There’s no doubt that the amount of free coins and the varied opportunities offered to earn more each day is much higher than many other social casino apps.

Leveling Up

While there are levels in Tycoon Casino all games are unlocked so leveling up is not needed in order to increase your entertainment.

Moving from one to the next requires that you spin some amount of money. There’s a status bar that shows your progress but you can’t get any more specific details such as your percentage of completion.

You do get free coins with the passage of most levels while passing others will give you points towards your next VIP status which is their internal rewards program. Clicking on the level progress bar will show you the prize for each of your next few levels.

Ease of Use

Tycoon Casino follows a typical layout for social casino apps with a top and bottom bar that provide information about your coin balance, level, access to the shop for coin packages, and an icon for the settings screen. Daily bonus information and reminder icons are on the bottom.

These are all easy to read and access.

When you’re in a slot the spin button is to the lower right, large, and green. Right next to it is the Max Bet button and while I don’t like it when those are close together they’re far enough apart that you’d really have to slip big time to accidentally hit it.

The sides of each slot have a lot of “white space” which is good because they’re not overly cluttered but bad because it makes the overall slot screen itself smaller than necessary.

I think they could make better use of that side space and it would make the slot screens themselves easier to read.

The one constant challenge with the layout is the use of small Xs for closing out ads and pop-ups.

Several times I had to click an X repeatedly to get it to close and on some of the ads served by a 3rd party I’d swear I had clicked on the X but was taken to the Google Play store screen to download the game in the ad.

I went through several rounds of clicking an X, ending up in the Play store, clicking the back button, trying to click the X again, back to the Play store, and so on.

That kind of design leads to a lot of frustration pretty quickly.

Entertainment Factor

If I focus simply on the level of entertainment presented by the slots in their lineup I’d have to give them a pretty strong score.

I was intrigued with most, the icons for each look nice, and the variety is good.

A majority of the slots have jackpots and the graphics are decent.

The types of free spin bonuses they have was also very good. There were different kinds like sticky wilds, retrigger options, and item collections.

The sound effects are so-so. There is a clicking sound when you tap the spin button, the sound of the symbols landing, and sound when you land a bonus. But the music and sounds remind me of slot machines from 30 years ago. They have a tinny ring to them.

For the most part, though, the slots themselves are fun, have interesting bonuses and can hit big wins.

The app was almost enjoyable except for one thing and we’ll talk about that next.

In-App Ads

Here is where Tycoon Casino falls apart, in my opinion. While I’ve certainly seen some with far worse application of in-app ads this one certainly crosses into the extremely annoying range.

They use both pop-up ads for their own features and coin packages as well as 3rd party, interstitial ads (full screen ads).

These ads can pop up when you first login, while you’re playing a slot, and when you try to move between slots or screens.

I even had pop-ups asking if I wanted to watch a video for more coins WHILE I was in a bonus getting free spins. Who would leave a bonus to watch a video ad?

You might have to close 6 pop-ups when you first login, close 1 every 10-30 spins while playing a slot, and then close 3 more when you get out of that slot.

It’s obnoxious.

To be fair any purchase you make supposedly removes all ads but I wasn’t willing to go there because information about removing ads is not clear.

Their messaging does not explain whether this only includes 3rd party ads or also applies to their own pop-ups.

To further muddy the waters, a message in the app’s inbox screen said that a purchase OVER $4.99 would remove all interstitial ads forever and showed a button for a $4.99 coin purchase offer. But the message said I would need a purchase of MORE than $4.99 so why is it linking to that offer since $4.99 is not MORE than $4.99?

In case I wasn’t confused enough a later pop-up has a message that says “Any purchase removes ads forever”. Which is it – any purchase, a purchase of more than $4.99, or a purchase of $4.99 or more?

Interestingly, when I downloaded the app I spent about an hour or two on it before closing it down and never saw a 3rd party ad. When I logged back in later I went straight to a 3rd party ad before I could even get to the home screen. After that I saw 3rd party ads on a regular basis.

All of these ads were for other social casino apps. These always used to make my husband and I laugh because at times one or the other of us would see an ad for a social casino that looked better than the one we were playing and we’d leave that one through the ad.

That’s exactly what Tycoon Casino has set up. If their goal is to get people to stick with them and eventually profit by having them pay to buy coins why would they open the door for new players to leave them through an ad and head to a competitor?

It’s this use of pop-ups – particularly the number of them, the placement (during play) and the challenge in closing some of them – that drops their overall score in my ratings model.

This was somewhat offset by the amount of free coins given each day. Without that their review score would have been much lower.

Coin Purchases

Based on the Shop screen $4.99 will buy you 1.65 billion coins which is enough to get you 6,600 spins if you were to bet the lowest bet amount of 250,000 which is only available on a few slots.

That’s actually relatively good value for your money when compared to some others.

The Benefits button on the store screen shows that you also get the following with every purchase:

• VIP points
• Bonus Back which is collected every Friday (think “cash back” like with a credit card but you get free coins instead)
• Trigger the Rebuy Bonus for 24 hours (you can respin a bonus if you don’t like the amount won)
• Contributions to your piggy bank

Purchases over $9.99 (or $9.99 and over?) also get you a scratch card.

If you buy coins and you like to make sure you’re getting the best price be prepared to create a spreadsheet to track the different offers you’ll find in the pop-ups.

Yes, I lean towards the analytical side so these kinds of differences catch my attention.

Why are they offering such a vast set of offers and which one is really the best? Frankly, I think this kind of presentation would stop me from buying coins at all because I’d get hung up on which one of these was best for me.

Either their own data shows that this arrangement provides them the best return or they’ve lost control of their offer testing.

VIP Rewards Program

Similar to Playtika, Tycoon Casino has an internal rewards program. All players start out as VIP Quartz level and can advance to Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Onyx, and Master.

Each VIP level except Master (as of this date) has additional sub-levels for a total of 101 VIP statuses.

There’s nothing that tells you how many points you need in order to move from one status to another.

Benefits of the VIP program include a bonus percentage when you make coin purchases, a percentage multiplier for your login bonus, a percentage multiplier on your VIP points earned and a “Bonus Back” percentage.

Your VIP status has no value outside of the game. It’s meant to multiply some bonuses and increase the coins you receive when you buy coin packages.

Does Tycoon History Save Your Game Play?

Unless you switch phones or find some other way to wipe your phone’s history your game play is saved even if you don’t connect to Facebook.

I tried clearing the game’s cache in my phone, then deleted the data, uninstalled the app and the reinstalled to see if I’d start out as a new player again.

Instead, I was shown a screen that asked me to synchronize my game data and there was no option other than to agree to do so.

Tycoon Casino History

Tycoon Casino History was created by Triwin Games and launched in August of 2018. It’s one of 8 social casino apps they’ve created that are available through the Google Play and Apple stores.

The company is headquartered in Shenzen, China just outside of Hong Kong.

As of July 2020 they had approximately 50 employees based on a video interview with one of the co-founders, Wayne Qin.

They have continued to keep the app updated and a new release came out only a few weeks ago.

Review Summary

Tycoon Casino is just over two years old and while it scores well for having all slots unlocked and providing a large new player bonus for lots of free spins the pop-ups are distracting and frustrating.

If they could tighten up their in-app ads and slim down the complex coin package offers that alone would improve the customer experience and enjoyment with this mobile app.
